Meditations about Otaidokan

I am quite surprised by the success of Otaidokan. In a couple of weeks it has had more than a 100 downloads and more than a few buyers have left a tip! Thinking about the reasons for this, I came with some conclusions:

  • The game is free.
  • It was part of the Samurai Jam and that gives visibility to all its participants.
  • Short. At first glance, 12 pages can be read casually easier than 250.
  • Colourful art. I am quite sure that the cute little samurai attract the players. The cover, even simple as it is, is quite flashy.
  • Easy to grasp. I mostly do odd concepts of games (in Super Space Knights players control armies which seems weird for many,  Necroworlda is more of a board game than a ttrpg and you still control a whole gang of survivalists). Otaidokan is more friendly in the way of controlling a single character and set in a Japan-ish setting.
  • I have been in this for a while. I don't want to brag about this but experience is a grade and the longer you are in the business, higher numbers of people get to know you. I am still far from being a celebrity but after a few years releasing games (some better than others) when a new thing comes out, it doesn't come from a complete stranger but oh, that guy again. Eventually, I will get there.
